The Power of Nutrition—Feel Good with Healthy Habits

March is National Nutrition Month – this year’s theme, “The Power of Nutrition,” highlights how daily habits can support how you feel, perform, and function—not just today, but long term.

For athletes and active adults, feeling your best is not just about one nutrient or one “perfect” meal. It is about building consistent, supportive habits across multiple areas of well-being. Nutrition is a key piece, but it works best alongside movement, sleep, and stress management.

Nutrition: Fueling for energy and recovery

Food is your body’s primary source of energy and building blocks. Consistent fueling helps support stable energy, recovery, and focus.

Two ideas to put it into practice:

  • Focus on Addition: Include a source of carbohydrates, protein, and fat at meals to support energy and satisfaction. Consider asking yourself, what can I add to this meal or snack to add more balance, staying power, or enjoyment?
  • Identify Your Go Tos: When life gets busy, what are your go to balanced meals and snacks? Consider ensuring your freezer or shelf stable items are stocked for when hectic schedules sneaks up on you.

Movement: Supporting both performance and health

Movement strengthens your cardiovascular system, supports mental health, and helps your body adapt to training.

Two ideas to put it into practice:

  • Anchor movement to your routine: Pair a short walk or stretch with something you already do, like after meals or between classes.
  • Find joy in movement: Our environment often tells us ‘exercise’ has to look a certain way, how might expanding our definition of movement might support you? Consider local line dancing classes, hiking, meditation, or playing with your kids outside next time you look to incorporate movement into your day.

Sleep: The foundation of recovery

Your body restores energy, repairs muscle, and regulates hormones when it sleeps.

Two ideas to put it into practice:

  • Create a wind-down routine: Spend 20–30 minutes before bed limiting screens and doing something relaxing.
  • Keep timing consistent: Aim to go to bed and wake up at similar times, even on weekends when possible.

Stress Management: Supporting your nervous system

Stress is a normal part of life, but chronic stress can impact energy, digestion, recovery, and heart health. Supporting your nervous system is part of supporting your overall health.

Two ideas to put it into practice:

  • Pause and check in: Take 1–2 minutes during the day to notice your breathing and tension levels.
  • Pair stress relief with daily habits: Try listening to music, getting outside, or calling a friend during a break.

Bringing it all together

The power of nutrition is not just about what’s on your plate. It is about how your daily habits work together to support your body. Small, consistent actions—like eating regularly, moving your body, prioritizing sleep, and managing stress—can have a meaningful impact on how you feel and perform.
